Top 5 Recruits in the 2011 Class

by Canes Pundit on February 7, 2011

We here at CanesPundit.com are big fans of Top 5 lists.  Therefore, we thought it would be a good idea to put together a list of the Top 5 recruits in UM’s 2011 class.  Much has been made about the progress Coach Golden‘s staff was able to make as soon as they took over. We don’t think you can overstate the significance of what they’ve done.  We couldn’t even have made a Top 5 list when they took over because they didn’t even have 5 recruits on board at the time.
Without further adieu, we give you the Top 5 recruits in the 2011 recruiting class:

5. Matt Goudis – Who?  Matt Bosher’s departure leaves a gaping hole on Miami’s roster.  Goudis, the 6th ranked kicker in the country per Scout.com, is touted as “the top field goal kicker in the nation in the Class of 2011.”  His kicks have height and consistency.  Even though he hit a 54 yarder last year, once he adds to his 165 lb. frame, he’ll get even more distance on his kicks.  Probably won’t be on kickoff duty, but should win the FG/XP spot.  Previously committed to Boise State and Michigan before committing to the Canes on January 16th.

4. Kevin Grooms – ESPN.com lists Grooms as the 11th best running back in the country, noting his virtually unparalleled quickness and elusiveness.  The leading scorer in Broward County last year, the 5’10″ Grooms stands as the lone running back in the class.  With the plethora of talent Miami has at the position, it will be interesting to see if he redshirts his first year.

3. Jalen Grimble – Grimble, a former USC commit, becomes the first player out of the state of Nevada to sign with Miami.  The guy is a beast who looks to be fast off the line and uses his speed well to get by lineman.  Scout.com has the five star athlete listed as the 7th best defensive end in the country.  Grimble was considered a long shot, but proved to be the biggest addition on Signing Day.
2. Dallas Crawford – Once Brandon Harris decided to go pro, it decimated an already thin cornerbacking unit.  Brandon McGee will likely occupy one CB spot, while the other one is up for grabs.  We wouldn’t be surprised if a true freshman won that spot, with Crawford being the most likely candidate.  This was another prospect that had previously committed to another school (Michigan), only to be lured by the tempting siren that is Al Golden.  Also a QB, Crawford is listed as Scout.com’s 35th best cornerback in the nation.
1. Anthony Chickillo – 3G (for 3rd Generation) blew away the competition in the Under Armour game.  The defensive end simply dominated the high school all star game, earning MVP honors.  Now, to give credit where credit is due – Randy Shannon brought him in.  Golden retained him.  By far the most important component to this class, Chickillo has a chance to contribute immediately in his freshman year.  We see a bright future for this kid, with the hope that he stays for all four years.

Quick Hits: Man, glad the Packers pulled it out in what turned out to be a great game.  Some throws by Rodgers were downright sick.  I know he’s a QB, but I’m takin that dude if I get the #1 pick in my fantasy draft….Can someone explain to me why the ‘female’ from ‘The Biggest Loser’ is one of the Go Daddy girls?  That chick has a bigger Adam’s apple than I do (and probably has a bigger penis, too)…..I will have nightmares over Fergie’s rendition of ‘Sweet Child of Mine.’  WTF was that?  And why was her voice deeper than Axl Rose’s?….Saw that Kouandjo picked Bama and Clowney set his announcement time for 2/14 at 10:15 am.  Would like Clowney to shock the world by picking UM but wouldn’t want him to get consistently shown up in practice by Chickillo like he did at the Under Armour game.
